Have A 'Magic Carpet' Ride

Many years ago, a newspaper editor asked me to write about the 1-0 'most readily useful' foods for individuals. How may I choose? No one food supplies anything the human body needs, and each food produces its unique combination of impor-tant nutrients. Then I came up with the thought of 'magic carpet' foods, foods which can be impor-tant because they 'take' other healthy foods with them.

Morning meal cereal is one of my personal favorite secret carpet meals. A fortified cereal including Wholemeal Total is a wonderful food on its own–it products fiber and 100 % of the daily price for 1-2 different vitamins and minerals. Identify further on our partner article - Click here: any-clean. Eat it topped with fresh fruit and milk, or layer it in a parfait with nuts, berries and yogurt, and you have a far more nutrient-packed food.

Pizza crust is another favorite because it could hold a number of foods on it. It's an easy task to make your own, or you can purchase cash or ready-baked crust at your market. Distribute your cash with tomato sauce and you've added lycopene, a plant substance that gives tomatoes their red color and that can help increase health. 'Decorate your crust with a lot of vegetables to add to the purpose of eating more fruits and vegetables,' indicates Georgia Kostas, M.P.H., R.D., L.D., author of 'The Cooper Clinic Solution to the Diet Revolution.' 'Eating 4 1/2 cups each day offers the antioxidants, fibre and phyto-nutrients that might help reduce cholesterol oxidation and hardening of the arteries, which could contribute to a lesser risk of cardiovascular disease.'

Dinner easily makes my list-the variety of toppings and 'mix-ins' is nearly unlimited, such as lycopene-rich tomato sauce; protein-packed lean ground meat or chicken, smoked fish and other fish; reduced-fat ricotta cheese or grated cheese for protein and calcium; heart-healthy nuts such as walnuts; and, naturally, veggies. Take to various kinds of pasta; for instance, fiber-containing whole wheat spaghetti, thin buckwheat soba from Japan, Asian rice noodles, and also pastalike spaghetti squash.

My record has lots of other foods, including soup, bread made with corn tortillas, baked potato, and wholegrain. Which foods would be on your list?

Q: Can you suggest other forms of 'magic carpet' ingredients from different food groups?

A: How about lettuce and salad vegetables? Combination in elements from as many food groups as you are able to for a filling and nutrition-packed food.
